Surgery for Mesothelioma After Radiation Therapy

The following videos describe a treatment protocol for mesothelioma pioneered at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. This protocol, which is known as Surgery for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma After Radiotherapy (SMART) combines radiation and surgery. The SMART protocol is not widely available in Canada and patients must be referred to a highly specialized, expert centre with substantial surgical experience. To undergo the protocol, patients must meet strict eligibility criteria. At present, SMART isn’t necessarily a cure for mesothelioma, although it may extend life for some patients.
